He was seriously confused about what he was trying to convince me that I was. First I’m a Siren, um, suuuure. Next, I’m some Cleaver Queen Vashni girl, but no, I’m actually a Soremni princess with a brain the size of a peanut between her ears. No idea what a peanut was. Not actually, I’m a human girl who loves the smoothie place and her music program. Okay, I definitely got the music reference, I mean, I was obsessed with lines, and the fact that every sound in Monster City was in time with those constant drums, it kept everything extremely pleasant, but all these images he showed me of people I clearly wasn’t, just made me sad for him. He’d found the wrong girl lost in the Deepness, or more likely, wasn’t thinking clearly.

I just nodded and ate sagarp while he talked about stuff I didn’t listen to. I did listen to those drums. While they beat, another sound spilled over the top of it. Furor. My tentacles danced in time to the rhythm in my head, the green and purple creature as weird looking as I was. Forget that. He was much prettier than I was with that dark purple hair and lilac eyes, but I had tentacles. Like that was a good thing.

The Master of Deepness caught my chin in his hand and stared into my eyes. “You aren’t paying attention.”

“Sure I am. I’m all of these people. I understand. Thanks for telling me. Is this the kitchen?” I glanced around the room, the table and chairs really old and moldy looking.

“It’s my study. I just showed you footage of Terramore being destroyed. You did that.”

I nodded. “Of course I did. I blew it up, right? With the prince guy, the one I’m mated to.”

“Soremni married, Vashni mated.” He frowned at me. “You don’t feel anything at seeing the destruction? You were very upset about it.”

“Why? I don’t know those people.”

He closed his eyes. “But you did know them. You cared about them.”

“Then why did I destroy it?”

“You didn’t intend to.”

“Riiiight. Sorry, I forgot that part. Look, I’m going to take a walk around Monster City. Is there a divey part of town that I should stay away from?” Or head straight towards. Sitting in a musty study with a crazy old monster was kind of boring, even with really good sagarp. Okay, I’d eaten all of it. I missed the pirates and no-gooders on Harko.

“I will take you on a tour of the city if you’d like, but Princess, you have to return to the Prince.”

“Oh, sure. I’ll go back to the prince after I get my bearings. What’s the rush?”

“He lost you. He’s extremely worried.”

I patted his cheek. “I’m sure he’ll survive.” Except as a figment of his imagination, he probably wouldn’t. “Let’s go! I want to buy something.”

“Clothing? Weapons?”

“Actually an instrument or two.”

“Of course.” He hesitated near the arched doorway. “You don’t believe me, but you will.”

“Don’t be silly. Of course I believe that I’m a Princess-Siren-Vashni-Slave.
